A longer process of development with a lot of good luck

my name is Alexander, I’m 23 years old and I’m from Germany. After finishing school I studied Tourism- & Event-Management B.A. in Hamburg. Since September 2015 I live in Rome where I study M.Sc. in Business Administration.

Actually my way into the tourism industry was not as strait and foreseen as for many of the other participants. Instead it was a longer process of development, sometimes influenced by good luck. Like many children and teenagers, I had a lot of ideas about my future field of working, but “tourism” was not a part of them.

When I was 17 I started to engaged as a youth group leader in the parish of my home town, which included the planning and execution of several group journeys inside Germany and abroad. I really liked the aspect of planning, organizing and coordinating, but not necessarily connected to travelling. One and a half year before finishing school I went to an education training fair, where several universities and companies introduced themselves. There I saw a university that offered a bachelor course in Tourism & Event Management and I thought: “Event-Management –sounds great!”

Finally, I enrolled for this course with the aim to become an event manager. The second focus, tourism, seemed to me as a nice add-on, not more. But during the three years of lectures and two internships I got more and more fascinated by the great opportunities in the tourism industry. And last of all it was a combination of an internship for a German tour operator in Italy and an abroad semester in Spain that led me to the decision to do the master studies abroad. Which turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Greetings, Alexander
